Some services pour a strong cleaning agent into the machine, run a hot cycle and leave. That is a chemical rinse. It reaches the same surfaces your own drum-clean cycle reaches, which means the residue on the drum’s outer face — the actual cause of persistent odour — remains.

A genuine deep clean involves dismantling: the casing comes off, the drum comes out, and the hidden surfaces are cleaned directly. It takes one to three hours, not twenty minutes. If a quote seems unusually cheap and the job is quoted at under an hour, this is almost certainly the difference.

2. How long does the job take? Under an hour means no dismantling.

Washing machine mould is extremely common in Singapore and is not a sign of a dirty household. It is what happens when a warm, damp, enclosed metal and rubber environment never gets the chance to dry out. The question is only how to remove it properly.

Where mould actually grows

• The door gasket fold (front loaders) — the most common site by a wide margin
• The drum’s outer face — mixed into the detergent scum layer
• The detergent dispenser channels — especially the softener compartment
• The drain filter housing — standing water plus trapped lint

Only the first and third are reachable by hand. The other two require the machine to be opened.

Why bleach cycles do not fix it

Running bleach through a machine is the most common DIY response, and it produces a misleading result: the mould goes pale and looks gone.

Bleach de-pigments mould rather than removing it. The organic matter stays on the surface, and because it is now colourless, it looks solved for a week or two until it darkens again. Meanwhile the scum layer it is growing in is untouched.

Physical removal is the only reliable method. Never mix bleach with vinegar or any acidic cleaner — that produces chlorine gas, which is genuinely dangerous in a small enclosed service yard.

Condo installations differ from HDB in two practical ways: management access requirements, and the way machines are often built into cabinetry. Both are routine for us.

Access and building management

Most condo managements ask contractors for proof of insurance and a company registration before granting access. We carry S$1,000,000 public liability cover, an NEA Class 3 licence (NEA240120/6509C/C3/N01) and UEN 201316509C, and can send these across before the appointment if your management office requires them.

Our crews are employed staff on valid MOM work permits and arrive in Sureclean uniform, which is generally what management is checking for.

Built-in, stacked and cabinet-enclosed machines

Condo laundry is frequently a stacked washer and dryer, or a machine built into a kitchen or utility cabinet. Both need the machine partially withdrawn to open the casing.

Why HDB machines build up faster

Washer-dryer combos (2-in-1 units) are popular in Singapore condos and smaller flats where there is only room for one appliance. They are convenient, and they accumulate residue faster than a standalone washing machine for a specific reason.

Why 2-in-1 units build up faster

A combo does both jobs in the same drum. That means lint shed during the drying cycle lands on surfaces still coated with detergent residue from the wash cycle. Wet detergent film plus dry lint makes a compacted deposit that is considerably more stubborn than either alone.

Combos also usually have a condenser system for the drying function, which collects its own lint and moisture and is another place residue accumulates.

Why vents block in Singapore homes

Most Singapore dryers sit in an enclosed service yard or bathroom with a short vent run to an external louvre. Short runs block faster than long ones because the lint has less duct to distribute across, and the humid air outside means lint arriving at the louvre is damp and sticks rather than blowing clear.

Condenser and heat-pump dryers have no external vent, but they do have a condenser unit and lint trap that clog the same way.

Warning signs your vent needs clearing

The drain pump filter is the one part of a washing machine most people never open, and it is the easiest to clean yourself. This page shows you how, and is honest about the cases where a clean filter will not solve your problem.

Where the filter is on your machine

Front loaders: behind a small hinged hatch or removable panel at the bottom front, usually on the right. Some models have a small drain hose tucked beside it.

Top loaders: most do not have a drain pump filter. Instead they have a mesh lint filter clipped inside the drum wall, which lifts out for rinsing.

How to clean it yourself

1. Switch the machine off at the wall.
2. Lay a towel down and put a shallow tray or baking dish in front of the hatch. There will be water.
3. Open the hatch. If there is a small drain hose, use it to drain the water first — it is much less messy.
4. Unscrew the filter cap anticlockwise and pull the filter out.
5. Clear the lint, hair, coins and debris. Rinse it under a tap and use an old toothbrush on the mesh.
6. Check inside the housing with a torch and clear anything left in the impeller.
7. Refit firmly — a loose filter leaks. Run a short cycle and check for drips.

Every one to three months is a sensible interval, more often if you wash a lot of towels or pet bedding.

When cleaning the filter will not help

A clogged filter causes drainage problems, error codes and a localised bad smell. If your issue is a musty smell across the whole drum, black flecks on clothing, or laundry that never smells fresh, the filter is not your cause — the outer drum surface is.

Clean the filter anyway, since it takes ten minutes. But do not expect it to fix a drum problem.

Samsung Eco Drum Clean — useful, but not a deep clean

Most Samsung machines include an Eco Drum Clean cycle, and the machine will prompt you to run it every forty washes or so. Run it — it is genuinely good maintenance and it is free.

What it does is run an empty high-temperature cycle to discourage build-up on the inner drum. What it cannot do is clean the outer drum surface, because no water jet in a normal cycle is aimed at it.

If your Samsung still smells after running Eco Drum Clean, that is the clearest possible signal that the residue is on surfaces the cycle does not reach.

A musty washing machine is not a sign you are doing anything wrong. It is a predictable outcome of washing in cold water in a humid climate with a machine that never fully dries. Here are the four causes in the order we actually find them in Singapore homes.

The four causes, in order of frequency

1. The door gasket fold (front loaders). Standing water plus lint plus detergent equals mould, in a sealed rubber channel that never dries. Peel it back and look.
2. The outer drum surface. Detergent scum and biofilm on the hidden face of the drum. This is the cause when the smell keeps returning after cleaning cycles.
3. The drain filter (front loaders). Trapped lint, hair and debris sitting in stagnant water behind the small hatch at the bottom front.
4. The detergent dispenser. Softener residue is thick and sticky and it sets in the drawer channels, growing mould on top.

Try this first — it may be all you need

Before booking anything, spend twenty minutes: clean out the dispenser drawer, clear the drain filter, wipe inside the gasket fold, then run an empty 60°C wash with a proper machine cleaner. Then leave the door ajar between every wash from now on.

If the smell is gone and stays gone, you have solved it for the cost of a bottle of cleaner. That is a good outcome and we would rather you have it.

When a deep clean is the only fix

Book a service when the smell returns within a few days of that routine, when black flecks appear on laundry, when you can see dark residue in the drum perforations, or when the machine is over three years old and has never been opened.

Those all point to the same thing: residue on surfaces the machine cannot reach by itself.

“Drum clean” cycle versus drum cleaning

Most machines made in the last decade have a drum clean programme. It runs an empty tub at high temperature, sometimes with extra soak time. It is useful maintenance and you should use it monthly.

What it cannot do is scrub. It circulates hot water past surfaces that have a hardened layer of detergent scum and biofilm on them. Hot water alone lifts a fraction of that and leaves the rest. This is why the programme works well on a machine that is already clean, and barely helps one that is not.

A physical drum clean removes the drum and directs a high-pressure jet at those surfaces. It is the difference between rinsing a roasting tin and scrubbing it.

Is the drum clean cycle on my machine enough?

For maintenance on an already-clean machine, yes, run it monthly. For a machine with an established smell or visible residue, no. The cycle circulates hot water but cannot scrub the hardened layer on the drum’s outer surface.

How dirty does a drum actually get?

On a three-to-five year old Singapore machine that has never been opened, the outer drum surface typically carries a grey-black film of detergent scum and mould, heavy enough to come away in sheets under pressure washing.

Can drum cleaning fix a noisy machine?

No. Noise usually indicates a worn bearing, a loose counterweight or an object trapped between the drums. Cleaning may remove a trapped object, but mechanical faults need a repair technician, which is a different service.
