Lim Chu Kang Neighborhood Overview
Located in the northwestern part of the North Region of Singapore is a 17.3km2 planning area named Lim Chu Kang. Mostly still in its rural state, Lim Chu Kang sits close in proximity with the Western Water Catchment, with two main roads that serve as its main point of entry and exit: the: Lim Chu Kang Road and Old Choa Chu Kang Road. Lim Chu Kang has a lot of land used for agriculture, farms, military training areas, and a major columbarium.
Because of exhumations to make way for new developments in Singapore, the only remaining cemeteries in the country can be found in Lim Chu Kang. In 1900, the Ama Keng Chinese Temple; Ama meaning ‘grandmother’ in Teochew and Hokkien, was built in Lim Chu Kang to worship the holy mother, goddess of peace and happiness, Mazu.Â
However, in the late 1980’s, the government secured the temple’s land for the country’s military causes. Residents, devotees, and the temple committee tried to petition against the acquisition but to no avail.
