Shenton Way Neighbourhood Overview
Built mostly on reclaimed land, Shenton Way is a vital trunk road in Singapore’s Central Area, notable for having numerous commercial skyscrapers surrounding both sides of the road. Shenton Way is a one-way street starting at the intersection of Boon Tat Street, Commerce Street, and Raffles Quay, and ends at Keppel Road. Initially planned to be named Raffles Way, but later chosen to be named Shenton Way to honor Sir Shenton Thomas, Governor of Singapore between 1934 to 1946 for his resolution to stay in the city during the Japanese occupation of Singapore during World War II.
Shenton Way formally opened in 1951, becoming famous for being Singapore’s own ‘Wall Street’ when government offices and commercial developments were put up in the area from the 1970’s onwards. Today, Shenton Way continues to be on par with Raffles Place in terms of being a prime commercial address for businesses. The future Shenton Way MRT station will be built on Park Street next to Asia Square.
