Key takeaways

  • Mould mites are tiny white mites that feed on mould. They appear wherever damp surfaces, dry food or fresh plaster stay humid.
  • The most effective way to prevent them is to keep indoor humidity below about 60% with good ventilation and a dehumidifier.
  • To get rid of them, throw out infested food, vacuum before you wipe, remove the mould and dry every surface fully.
  • You can handle a single cupboard yourself. If mites are all over the home, book a professional spring clean, from $600*.

Short answer: Mould mites are tiny white or pale-brown mites, under half a millimetre long, that feed on mould growing on damp walls, furniture, leather, dry food and new plaster. Singapore’s humidity all year round lets them multiply fast, especially in newly renovated BTO flats and rooms with poor airflow. Bring indoor humidity below about 60%, remove the mould and food they live on, then deep clean every surface. A professional spring clean from $600* covers the whole home in one visit.

What are mould mites and why are they common in Singapore?

Mould mites are small arachnids, most often Tyrophagus putrescentiae, that live on mould and fungi and eat them. Each one is under half a millimetre long, so most people only notice them when hundreds gather and look like moving white dust. They do not feed on people. However, their droppings and shed skins can irritate the nose, eyes and skin of sensitive members of the household.

Singapore gives them ideal conditions. Outdoor humidity is high all year. Homes that stay closed during the day, where laundry dries indoors, or that have fresh plaster and paint can hold even more moisture. Mould can grow within days on damp surfaces, and the mites follow the mould.

Homeowners often first see them in a new BTO flat or a freshly renovated condo, where walls and cement are still giving off moisture. Fixing the problem always takes two steps. First, remove the moisture that feeds the mould. Second, remove the mould, dust and food debris that feed the mites. If the whole home needs a reset, see our professional spring cleaning service.

How can you tell if you have mould mites?

Take a close look before you reach for a spray. Mould mites leave a few clear signs:

  • Moving white or beige dust on walls, window sills, shelves or the underside of furniture. Wipe it with a tissue. If the specks smear or start crawling, they are mites.
  • A fine film on dry food such as flour, oats, cereal, milk powder, rice or pet kibble, sometimes with a sweet, musty smell.
  • Dark or grey mould spots nearby, often behind wardrobes, inside cabinets or on leather bags and shoes.
  • Itchy skin or sneezing that gets worse in one particular room.

You can usually see their oval, see-through bodies and long hairs with a phone camera on full zoom or a simple magnifying glass. Don’t confuse them with booklice, which are slightly larger and flatter and also like damp paper. Dust mites are different again: they live in bedding and are too small to see. If you find specks on just one packet of food, that packet is probably the problem rather than the whole home.

Where do mould mites hide in HDB flats, condos and landed homes?

Mould mites go wherever moisture and mould build up. In Singapore homes, these are the usual hotspots:

  • New BTO and renovated flats: fresh plaster, cement screed and built-in carpentry give off moisture for weeks, so mites appear inside cabinets and along skirting.
  • Kitchens: dry-goods cupboards, the back of the fridge, under the sink and around the washing machine.
  • Bedrooms: behind wardrobes pushed against external walls, inside drawers, and in mattresses that never fully dry.
  • Bathrooms and yards: silicone joints, ceiling corners and laundry drying areas with little airflow.
  • Condo units: rooms kept shut while owners are at work, and storerooms without windows.
  • Landed homes: ground-floor rooms, store rooms and walls where rain seeps in.

Fabric matters too. Curtains, fabric sofas and mattresses trap moisture and skin flakes, which feed mould. If there is an obvious leak or wet patch on a wall, report it to your town council, MCST or contractor first. While the wall stays wet, cleaning alone will not stop the mites coming back.

How do you prevent mould mites? A step-by-step checklist

Prevention is mostly about humidity. Mould mites struggle to breed when indoor humidity stays below about 60%. Work through these steps:

  • Step 1: Measure. Buy an inexpensive digital hygrometer and check the reading in each room for a week.
  • Step 2: Ventilate. Open windows when you are home, run exhaust fans after cooking and showering, and leave wardrobe and storeroom doors slightly open.
  • Step 3: Dehumidify. Run a dehumidifier in rooms that stay closed, and put moisture absorbers inside wardrobes and cabinets. Empty them every week.
  • Step 4: Dry laundry properly. Don’t dry clothes in bedrooms. Use the yard, a dryer or another area with good airflow.
  • Step 5: Store food airtight. Move flour, cereal, rice and pet food into sealed containers and use older stock first.
  • Step 6: Leave a gap. Keep furniture a few centimetres away from external walls so air can circulate.
  • Step 7: Clean little and often. Wipe shelves, sills and the insides of cabinets every month. Wash bedding weekly at 60°C where the care label allows.

These habits cost little, and they deal with the cause rather than the symptoms.

How do you get rid of mould mites once you have them?

Once you can see mites, a quick wipe will not be enough. Deal with the source in this order:

  • Throw out infested food in sealed bags, then vacuum and wipe the empty cupboard.
  • Vacuum first, wipe second. Use a vacuum with a HEPA filter on walls, shelves, joints and fabric, then empty it outdoors. If you wipe first, you just push the mites into corners.
  • Remove the mould. Clean hard surfaces with a mould remover or a diluted bleach solution, following the label. Wear gloves and a mask, then dry the area completely.
  • Treat soft furnishings. Hot-wash any fabrics you can remove. Mattresses, sofas and curtains that cannot go in a machine need steam or extraction cleaning, then thorough drying.
  • Dry everything. Keep a dehumidifier running in the room for several days.

Vacuum again every few days for two weeks, because eggs can hatch after the first clean. Never mix bleach with other cleaning products, and keep children and pets out of the room while you work. If mites come back after two rounds of cleaning, the moisture source has not been fixed.

How much does mould mite cleaning cost in Singapore?

We don’t have a separate ‘mould mite treatment’ on our price list. The work is a thorough deep clean, plus extra attention to the soft furnishings where mites and mould collect. At Sureclean, one-time spring cleaning (deep cleaning) starts from $600*, and most homes cost between $700* and $800*. That covers a top-to-bottom clean of the whole home by our own trained crew, who bring their own equipment.

Soft furnishings are priced separately:

  • Mattress cleaning: a queen mattress costs $140* (dry) or $165* (wet).
  • Curtain cleaning: on-site steam cleaning is $35* per panel, or $40* for blackout panels.
  • Sofa cleaning: a 3-seater fabric sofa costs $225*.
  • Disinfection: after heavy mould, a disinfection session from $265* can follow the clean.

All prices are before GST, and first-time customers get 10% off.

Doing it yourself costs less: a hygrometer, moisture absorbers, airtight containers and a mould remover. A dehumidifier is the biggest single purchase, but in Singapore’s climate you will use it all year.

When should you call a professional cleaner?

You can handle a single cupboard yourself. Call a professional when:

  • mites appear in more than one room, or come back after two rounds of your own cleaning;
  • you have just collected the keys to a new BTO or renovated unit and see white specks inside the new carpentry;
  • mould covers high walls, ceilings or large wardrobe interiors that you cannot safely reach;
  • someone at home has asthma, allergies or a young baby, and you want the job done in one go;
  • mattresses, sofas and curtains all need treating at the same time.

Sureclean has cleaned Singapore homes since 2013. We are NEA-licensed (NEA240120/6509C/C3/N01), carry S$1,000,000 public liability insurance and have a 4.9-star Google rating across 1,500+ reviews. Our spring cleaning crews vacuum, clean and dry every room. We can also arrange mattress, curtain and sofa cleaning alongside it. If a leak is causing the damp, get it fixed first. If a large infestation is still there after cleaning and drying, the next step is a licensed pest control company. We do not offer pest control.

If you have spotted mites on one packet of oats or in a single cupboard, you don’t need to book anyone. Throw the food away, vacuum and wipe the shelf, dry it thoroughly and switch to airtight containers. Put a moisture absorber in the cupboard and check it again in a week. Most small cases that stay in one place clear up this way at little cost. Only book help if the mites spread or keep coming back.

Frequently asked questions

Are mould mites harmful to humans?

Mould mites do not bite or live on people, but they can trigger allergies. Their droppings and shed skins may cause sneezing, itchy eyes or skin irritation, and eating heavily contaminated food can cause reactions in sensitive people. Throw away any affected food and clean the area. For a whole-home deep clean, Sureclean’s spring cleaning starts from $600*.

Why do new BTO flats get mould mites?

New BTO flats and freshly renovated homes hold moisture in their plaster, cement and carpentry for several weeks. Windows stay closed between key collection and the end of renovation, which traps that humidity, so mould grows and mites follow. Ventilate daily, run a dehumidifier and leave cabinet doors open. Post-renovation cleaning starts from $350*. A full spring clean from $600* suits flats where mites have already spread.

Can I kill mould mites with vinegar or bleach?

Diluted bleach or a mould remover kills mould on hard, non-porous surfaces, and removing the mould starves the mites. Vinegar is milder and less reliable on heavy growth. Vacuum first, then clean, then dry fully, and never mix bleach with other products. Fabric items such as mattresses need steam or extraction instead. Mattress cleaning starts from $105* for a single (dry).

How long does it take to get rid of mould mites?

Most homes see a clear drop within a day of a thorough clean. Eggs can hatch afterwards, though, so vacuum again every few days for about two weeks. The mites only go for good once humidity stays below about 60%. A professional spring clean from $600* removes most of the mites, mould and debris in one visit.

Will mould mites come back after cleaning?

They will come back if the damp stays. Cleaning removes the mites, mould and food, but Singapore’s humidity lets mould grow back quickly in closed, damp rooms. Keep a dehumidifier running, ventilate daily and store food airtight. Weekly or fortnightly home cleaning, from as low as $22/hour* or from $72* per 3-hour session, helps catch early signs before they spread.
