Key takeaways

  • Blot fresh urine straight away, rinse with cool water and use an enzyme cleaner that soaks as deep as the urine went.
  • Enzyme cleaners break down the cause of the smell, and extraction removes the residue. Old or repeated spots usually need both.
  • Singapore’s humidity slows drying and brings old urine smells back, so drying the rug fully matters as much as the cleaner you use.
  • Sureclean rug cleaning costs from $150* to $160* depending on size. Wall-to-wall carpet is quoted by floor area.

Short answer: For a fresh pet accident, blot it, rinse lightly with cool water, then apply an enzyme cleaner deep enough to reach wherever the urine went. Dry the rug fully. Enzymes break down what causes the smell, extraction physically removes the residue, and in Singapore’s humidity drying matters as much as either. If the smell comes back on humid days, or the spot is old or keeps being used, the rug needs professional cleaning. Sureclean’s rug cleaning starts from $150*.

Why does pet urine keep smelling in Singapore homes?

Pet urine is mostly water, but what it leaves behind is not. As it dries, it leaves salts and uric acid crystals in the carpet fibres, in the backing and sometimes on the floor underneath. Plain water does not dissolve them and they do not break down on their own. When the air turns humid, they take up moisture and the smell returns. That is why a patch that seemed fine in the morning can smell again after a wet afternoon.

Singapore makes this harder in three ways:

  • Humidity: rugs dry slowly indoors. Damp fibres stay damp for longer, so odour and mustiness build up faster.
  • Hard floors underneath: most HDB flats and condos have tile, vinyl or timber under the rug. Urine that soaks through can sit in grout lines or plank joints.
  • Repeat marking: pets go back to spots they can still smell, even when you cannot.

If the problem has gone past a spot clean, our carpet cleaning service covers both rugs and fitted carpet.

What should you do straight after a pet accident?

Acting quickly matters more than which product you use. Fresh urine is mostly in the top fibres, while old urine has already reached the backing. Work through this checklist:

  • 1. Blot, do not rub. Press white paper towels or an old towel into the spot and stand on it to draw the liquid up. Rubbing spreads urine sideways and pushes it deeper.
  • 2. Lift solids first. For vomit or faeces, scrape the mess up with a card or spoon before putting any liquid on it.
  • 3. Rinse lightly with cool water. Use a small amount and blot again. Do not use hot water at this stage.
  • 4. Apply an enzyme cleaner. Soak the spot as deep as the urine went, not just the surface, and leave it for the time given on the label.
  • 5. Dry it fully. Run a fan and open the windows. In a humid flat this can take most of a day.
  • 6. Check under the rug. Lift the corner and wipe the floor underneath, especially vinyl or grout.
  • 7. Keep the pet away until the spot is dry and no longer smells.

Enzyme cleaners or extraction: which actually works?

Each one solves a different part of the problem, and the best results usually come from using both.

Enzyme cleaners contain enzymes or bacteria that break down the organic compounds in urine, vomit and faeces. They are the right tool for odour because they act on the residue that causes the smell instead of covering it with fragrance. They do have limits. They need time and contact, they only work where the liquid reaches, and they do not take anything out of the carpet. The broken-down residue stays in the fibres until it is rinsed out.

Extraction means flushing the fibres with a cleaning solution and pulling the liquid back out with strong suction. It removes what is in the pile and much of what sits near the backing, which a household spray and a towel cannot do. Small portable spot extractors help with fresh accidents but do less on old or repeated spots.

In practice, use enzymes for the odour and extraction to remove the residue, then dry the rug thoroughly. If you skip the drying, Singapore’s humidity undoes much of the work.

Which home remedies make pet stains worse?

Some common fixes either set the stain or draw the pet back to the same spot:

  • Steam or very hot water on fresh urine. Heat can bond proteins to the fibres and fix both the stain and the smell. Start with cool water.
  • Ammonia-based cleaners. Urine contains ammonia compounds, so the cleaner’s smell can attract the pet back.
  • Bleach. It can strip colour from wool and many synthetic rugs, and it does not remove the residue.
  • Large amounts of vinegar and baking soda. They can reduce mild odour on a fresh spot. Heavy use leaves residue that attracts dirt, and they do not break down old uric acid deposits.
  • Air fresheners and scented sprays. They hide the smell from people but not from pets.
  • Over-wetting. Soaking a thick rug with no way to extract the liquid leaves a damp core that can smell musty within days.

If you have already tried several products on one spot, stop adding more. Layers of mixed chemicals and residue make professional cleaning harder.

Does it matter whether it is a rug or fitted carpet?

Yes. It changes where the urine ends up and what you can do about it.

Loose rugs are what most HDB, BTO and condo owners have. You can lift them, check the floor and dry both sides. The downside is that urine often soaks through to the tile, vinyl or timber underneath. Many newer BTO and resale renovations use vinyl planks, and liquid can sit in their joints, so the floor may need cleaning as well as the rug.

Wall-to-wall carpet is more common in some condos, landed-home bedrooms and offices. It cannot be lifted, so urine reaches the underlay, which soaks it up like a sponge. Surface cleaning rarely gets that deep. After repeated accidents in one corner, the underlay can hold the smell long after the top looks clean.

The fibre matters too. Wool absorbs more liquid and reacts badly to harsh chemicals. Synthetic rugs cope better with cleaning but can still hold odour in the backing. Check the care label before you use any product.

How much does pet-mess carpet cleaning cost in Singapore?

At Sureclean, rug cleaning costs from $150* to $160* depending on size. Wall-to-wall and office carpet is quoted by floor area, because the time depends on the room rather than on a single item. All prices are before GST, and first-time customers get a 10% discount.

In pet households the rug is often not the only source of the smell. If the same pet uses the sofa or bed, the odour may be coming from several places at once:

  • Fabric sofas: from $205* for a 2-seater (sofa cleaning).
  • Mattresses: from $105* for a single, dry clean (mattress cleaning).
  • Floors under the rug: urine in tile grout or vinyl joints needs deep floor cleaning, for example $560* for a 4-room HDB flat.
  • Disinfection after repeated accidents or illness: from $265* per session.

Before you decide, weigh the quote against the cost of replacing the rug. Every published rate is on our cleaning prices page.

When does a rug need a professional cleaner?

Call a professional if any of these apply:

  • The smell comes back on humid days, even after you have cleaned the spot several times.
  • The pet has gone in the same area repeatedly, so urine has reached the backing or underlay.
  • The stain is large or old, or has spread into a ring.
  • It is a wool or hand-made rug and you are not sure what it will tolerate.
  • It is fitted carpet that cannot be lifted and dried.
  • A baby, or someone with allergies, crawls or sleeps near the rug.
  • You are moving out of a rental and the carpet has to be presentable for handover.

When you do not need a professional

A single fresh accident on a synthetic rug that you catch quickly usually needs nothing more than blotting, an enzyme cleaner and a fan. Small dry messes such as shed hair or kibble crumbs only need a vacuum. If the spot dries without a mark and still smells clean after a few humid days, the job is done. Keep professional cleaning for smells that come back, spots the pet keeps using, and rugs you cannot risk damaging.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to clean a rug with pet urine in Singapore?

Sureclean’s rug cleaning costs from $150* to $160* depending on size, before GST. Wall-to-wall and office carpet is quoted by floor area. First-time customers get a 10% discount. If the urine has also soaked into the floor underneath, deep floor cleaning is a separate service, for example $560* for a 4-room HDB flat.

Do enzyme cleaners remove pet urine smell completely?

Often, on fresh spots treated quickly and deeply enough. On old or repeated spots, enzymes break down the cause of the odour, but the residue stays in the fibres and backing until it is rinsed and extracted. If the smell keeps returning on humid days, professional rug cleaning from $150* usually works better than adding more spray.

Can old pet urine stains be removed from a carpet?

Many can be greatly improved, but not every old stain comes out. Urine left for a long time can change the colour of some dyes for good, even once the smell has gone. A professional clean gives the best chance. Sureclean rug cleaning costs from $150* to $160*, and we can tell you what to expect once we have seen photos.

Is steam cleaning good for pet urine on carpet?

Not as a first step on fresh urine. Heat can bond proteins to the fibres and set both the stain and the smell. Blot first, rinse with cool water and treat with an enzyme cleaner. For deep or repeated spots, a professional clean is the safer option. Sureclean’s rug cleaning starts from $150*.

Will cleaning the carpet stop my pet peeing in the same spot?

It helps, because pets go back to places they can still smell. Removing the residue, not just the stain, makes that spot less appealing. If the habit starts suddenly, it is worth checking with a vet. If the sofa is also affected, Sureclean’s fabric sofa cleaning starts at $205* for a 2-seater.
