Key takeaways

  • An individual cleaner gives you one familiar person. You supply the equipment, arrange cover and deal with any damage yourself.
  • Hiring another person’s domestic helper is against the law. So is hiring anyone who does not hold a valid work pass. Employers who break this rule face a fine of $5,000 to $30,000.
  • When your regular cleaner is away, a company with its own crews can send someone else. You also get insurance and proper supervision.
  • Weekly home cleaning at Sureclean starts from as low as $22/hour*. Our cleaners bring their own equipment, so you don’t need to get anything ready.

Short answer: Hiring a part-time cleaner on your own works if you already know someone dependable who is legally allowed to work in Singapore. You also have to be willing to provide the equipment and arrange cover when they are away. A cleaning company is the better fit for households that want work that is insured and supervised, done by cleaners who bring their own equipment, with a replacement sent on sick days. Sureclean’s weekly home cleaning is priced as low as $22/hour*. One firm rule: never hire someone else’s domestic helper. It is illegal.

What are your options when hiring a cleaner in Singapore?

There are three routes most Singapore households pick from, and each one works. What sets them apart is who employs the cleaner and who you call when a job goes wrong. They also differ on one practical point: what happens on the day your cleaner can’t turn up.

  • A part-time cleaner working on their own, usually found through friends, neighbours or a community group. You and that cleaner settle the hours, the rate and the tasks between yourselves.
  • A booking platform or marketplace. Here the platform finds you a cleaner and takes care of the booking and payment. Helpling is one example, an online booking marketplace for part-time cleaners. Sendhelper is a home services booking platform, and Urban Company is a home services marketplace that runs through an app. Who is responsible for what? The platform’s terms set that out.
  • A cleaning company with its own crews. Here, the cleaners are the company’s own staff. It hires them, trains them and supervises their work, and if one can’t come, it sends a replacement. That is how Sureclean’s weekly home cleaning runs.

Cost turns out to be the smaller question. What really counts is how much of the managing you’re willing to take on yourself.

It comes down to who the cleaner is. A Singaporean or permanent resident is free to do part-time cleaning work. A foreigner is different: they must hold a valid work pass that covers this kind of job. Plenty of households slip up on exactly this point.

Hiring a foreigner who does not hold a valid work pass is an offence under the Employment of Foreign Manpower Act. The law covers tourists and overstayers. It also covers a domestic helper employed by another household. An employer found guilty faces a fine of $5,000 to $30,000, up to 12 months’ jail, or both. They can also be barred from hiring foreign workers.

A migrant domestic worker can only work for her own employer, and only at the address on her Work Permit. That rules out part-time or weekend jobs for other households, which are illegal. If it happens, her employer can be fined up to $10,000 and banned from hiring helpers. The helper doesn’t escape either. Her Work Permit can be revoked, and she can be sent home and barred from working in Singapore.

The rules are set out on MOM’s own pages, covering the Employment of Foreign Manpower Act and the employment rules for domestic workers, so you can check them yourself. Not sure whether a worker’s status is in order? Then don’t hire them.

Who is accountable if something breaks or goes wrong?

Hire a cleaner on your own and, in practice, you become their employer. Say a vase gets knocked over, the parquet picks up a scratch, or the cleaner slips on a wet bathroom floor. There is no company in between, so you and the cleaner have to settle it between yourselves. Ask upfront whether they carry liability insurance. If they don’t, check what your home insurance policy covers.

If you book through a platform, check its terms of service. Cover and process vary from one platform to the next. Before you book, read the parts on damage, insurance and how disputes are handled.

At Sureclean, the company answers for the work. Here is what that means in practice:

  • Our own trained crews, on our payroll, never sent through an agency or marketplace.
  • NEA-licensed, under licence NEA240120/6509C/C3/N01.
  • S$1,000,000 public liability insurance covering our work in your home.
  • Something not right? Tell us after the session and we will come back to re-clean.

Most people underestimate how much supervision counts. When nobody inspects the work, standards drop. A company puts a supervisor in place, and checking that work is the supervisor’s whole job.

What happens when your cleaner is sick, on leave or moves on?

Most households make the switch at this point. With an individual cleaner, one bout of illness, a trip home for the holidays or a new job elsewhere leaves you with no help, and the search starts all over again. A platform can usually send another cleaner who is free, but you may get a different person every time.

Planning for absence is part of running a company. Every Sureclean crew comes from our own staff. If your regular cleaner is away, we send a replacement who follows the same task list. You don’t have to find cover yourself.

The other practical difference is supplies. Singapore’s humidity means mould grows fast on grout, shower screens, window tracks and the backs of wardrobes. Sureclean cleaners come with their own equipment. You won’t need to buy mops and vacuums, or squeeze them into a small HDB service yard. If you hire an individual cleaner, you normally provide everything yourself and replace each item once it’s worn out.

Get it in writing from any company you book: who brings which supplies, and what happens if your cleaner can’t make it on the day.

How much does a cleaner cost in Singapore?

Rates aren’t fixed. Each cleaner or platform decides what to charge, and some platforms list their hourly rates online, so put the current figures side by side. Is a quote far below the going rate? Then check the cleaner’s work status before you agree to anything.

Weekly and fortnightly home cleaning from Sureclean starts as low as $22/hour*. Most sessions run 3–5 hours, and a 3-hour session starts from $72*. You pay the same hourly rate whether we come every week or every fortnight. Sign up for longer and the rate drops. Each visit covers ironing, laundry, washing dishes and changing bedsheets.

Not every job needs a regular cleaner, and some are better handled in a single visit. Spring cleaning starts from $600*. Move-in or move-out cleaning starts from $370*, and post-renovation cleaning from $350*. If it’s your first booking with us, you get 10% off. All prices are before GST. You’ll find them side by side in the table below, and the full rate card is on our cleaning prices page.

How do you choose a cleaner? A step-by-step checklist

Before the first visit, work through these steps, whichever route you take.

  • Step 1: write a task list. Go room by room: floors, bathrooms, kitchen surfaces, ironing, laundry, bedsheets. A clear list prevents most disagreements.
  • Step 2: confirm work status. Hiring a cleaner on your own? Check that they are legally allowed to work for you. If you are booking through a company, ask one simple question: are the cleaners its own direct employees?
  • Step 3: ask about insurance. Say a vase gets broken, or a cleaner gets hurt in your flat. Who covers the cost?
  • Step 4: sort out the supplies. Settle who brings the vacuum, the mop and the cleaning products, and who replaces them later.
  • Step 5: agree on cover. Ask who comes instead when your usual cleaner falls ill or goes on leave.
  • Step 6: get the price in writing. Ask for the hourly rate, the minimum number of hours, the GST and any extras, all stated clearly.
  • Step 7: review after three visits. Once the third clean is done, go round the flat together and update the list.

Which option suits which household?

No one answer fits every home. Still, most HDB flats, condos and landed houses tend to follow the same few patterns:

  • An individual cleaner makes sense when you already know someone dependable who is legally allowed to work for you. The same person comes every time. The trade-off is that you provide the equipment yourself, and when they go on leave or fall sick, finding a replacement is up to you.
  • A platform fits households that want flexible, now-and-then bookings made through an app. The trade-off is paperwork. Be prepared to read through the platform’s own terms on damage and disputes yourself.
  • A cleaning company fits some households better than others: busy working couples, families looking after young children or elderly parents, landed homes with several bathrooms, and condo owners. You pay on one invoice. The work is insured. If your regular cleaner is away, the company sends a replacement.

The size of your home counts too. Bigger homes tend to need the longer end of the typical 3–5 hour session. Doing that every week is hard for one cleaner working alone, and much easier with a team backing them up.

When should you call a professional cleaning company?

Signs it might be time to move to a company like Sureclean:

  • the cleaner you have now keeps cancelling, and finding someone to cover falls to you;
  • you are not sure your cleaner can legally work for you;
  • you want the work insured and supervised;
  • you are tired of buying and storing cleaning equipment;
  • Your home needs more than a quick wipe-down: think mould creeping along the grout, or a deep clean before you shift out.

Our own trained crews handle every weekly home cleaning visit at Sureclean. They come with their own equipment. Before the first visit, you and our team agree on a task list, and the crew sticks to it each week. Need something heavier, done just once? Our spring cleaning and move-in and move-out cleaning services cover those jobs. We started in 2013 and have since cleaned 50,000+ homes, earning a 4.9-star Google rating from 1,500+ reviews.

Some people can skip a cleaner altogether: those who live alone in a small flat, tidy up as they go and don’t mind giving floors and bathrooms an hour or two each week. Most of the work comes down to two tools: a decent vacuum, and a squeegee for the shower. Mould is easier to keep down if you open the windows or run a dehumidifier. For the harder areas, book a one-off deep clean once or twice a year to reset them.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a weekly cleaner cost in Singapore?

Weekly or fortnightly home cleaning with Sureclean costs as low as $22/hour*. Most visits run 3–5 hours, with pricing from $72* per 3-hour session. The hourly rate is the same whether we come every week or every other week. Sign up for a longer commitment and the rate goes down. Freelance cleaners and booking platforms each set their own prices, so check their current rates against ours directly. All Sureclean prices are before GST.

Can I hire my neighbour’s domestic helper to clean on weekends?

No. By law, a migrant domestic worker can only work for her own employer, and only at the address on her Work Permit. That makes weekend jobs at someone else’s flat illegal. Her employer can be fined up to $10,000. The person who hires her is also exposed: anyone who employs a foreigner without a valid work pass faces a fine of $5,000 to $30,000, jail, or both. If you want regular help, weekly cleaning from $22/hour* is the legal option.

Do Sureclean cleaners bring their own equipment?

Yes. Our cleaners come with their own equipment, so there are no mops or vacuums for you to buy or find space for at home. Each session takes care of floors, bathrooms and kitchen surfaces. It also covers ironing, laundry, washing the dishes and changing the bedsheets. Weekly home cleaning starts from as low as $22/hour*, and most sessions run for 3–5 hours.

What happens if my regular Sureclean cleaner is sick?

If your regular cleaner can’t come, you don’t need to find cover yourself. We send someone else from our own crews, and they follow the same task list. Every Sureclean cleaner is directly employed by us, not hired through an agency or a marketplace app. Our work is covered by S$1,000,000 public liability insurance. Weekly sessions start from $72* for 3 hours.

Is a one-off deep clean better than a regular cleaner?

Regular cleaning and deep cleaning are two separate jobs. A weekly cleaner stops the flat from slipping, keeping floors, kitchen and bathrooms under control. Grime still builds up over months in the places a routine visit never quite gets to, and mould creeps into corners. A one-off deep clean deals with that. Sureclean spring cleaning starts from $600*. Move-in or move-out cleaning starts from $370*. Plenty of households begin with one deep clean and then switch to weekly sessions.
