Where a top loader actually gets dirty
The inner tub of a top loader looks clean because you see it from above and it drains dry. The build-up is in two places you never see: the outer wall of the inner tub, and the inside of the outer tub that surrounds it.
On machines we open that are three to five years old and have never been serviced, the outer tub wall typically carries a heavy grey scale of detergent scum, often with visible black mould spotting. It comes off in sheets under a high-pressure jet.
Under the pulsator plate
Top loaders have a pulsator — the finned plate at the bottom of the drum that agitates the water. It unscrews, and the cavity underneath is a collection point for lint, hair, detergent sludge and the occasional coin.
This cavity is completely sealed from view during normal use and is never reached by any wash cycle. It is one of the more unpleasant parts of the job and one of the most satisfying to clean out.

What we actually find inside Singapore machines
On a typical three-to-five year old HDB machine that has never been opened, the outer drum surface carries a grey-black film of detergent scum mixed with mould. It is not visible from the door — you only see it once the drum is lifted out. In humid Singapore flats where the machine sits in an enclosed service yard or bathroom, this builds faster than in drier climates because the drum rarely dries out fully between washes.
Front loaders additionally trap residue in the rubber door gasket fold, which is where most musty smells originate. Top loaders tend to collect scum on the outer drum wall and under the pulsator plate.
