Washing Machine Maintenance Singapore
The schedule that keeps a machine from ever getting bad
Last updated: 12 August 2026 · By the Sureclean cleaning team
Key takeaways
- Weekly: wipe the gasket and leave the door ajar. Monthly: hot maintenance wash. Quarterly: clear the filter.
- Every 12–18 months: a physical drum deep clean, given Singapore humidity.
- Maintenance is far cheaper than restoration — a maintained machine never needs an overhaul.
Most washing machine problems we are called for were entirely preventable. This page sets out the maintenance schedule that keeps a machine from ever reaching the state where a deep clean is urgent.

The schedule
- After every wash — leave the door ajar so the drum dries. In Singapore’s humidity this is the single highest-value habit.
- Weekly — wipe inside the door gasket fold (front loaders) with a dry cloth.
- Monthly — run an empty hot wash (60°C+) with a proper machine cleaner, and rinse the detergent drawer.
- Quarterly — clear the drain pump filter.
- Every 12–18 months — book a physical drum deep clean.
The habits that matter most
If you only change two things: leave the door open between washes, and use less detergent than the bottle says. Singapore’s water is soft, and most households badly overdose detergent, which is the direct cause of the scum layer we find on drums.
Overdosing does not make clothes cleaner. It leaves residue in the machine and on fabric.
Our 4-step on-site method
Every job below is carried out by our own crew as part of Sureclean’s washing machine cleaning service, on site at your home in Singapore. The method is the same whichever machine type you have — only the time on site changes.
1. Dismantle on site
The outer casing comes off and the inner drum is lifted out — in your bathroom or service yard. Nothing is taken away to a workshop.
2. High-pressure deep clean
The hidden outer surface of the drum, the housing, filter, rubber gasket and detergent dispenser are washed down with a high-pressure jet. This is the surface a wash cycle can never reach.
3. Sanitise
The full drum assembly is treated with sanitiser, then rinsed.
4. Reassemble and test-run
The machine is rebuilt and put through a full test cycle before our crew leaves, so you see it working.
What we actually find inside Singapore machines
On a typical three-to-five year old HDB machine that has never been opened, the outer drum surface carries a grey-black film of detergent scum mixed with mould. It is not visible from the door — you only see it once the drum is lifted out. In humid Singapore flats where the machine sits in an enclosed service yard or bathroom, this builds faster than in drier climates because the drum rarely dries out fully between washes.
Front loaders additionally trap residue in the rubber door gasket fold, which is where most musty smells originate. Top loaders tend to collect scum on the outer drum wall and under the pulsator plate.

When you do not need us
If your machine is under a year old, has no smell and leaves no marks on clothing, a monthly hot maintenance wash with a proper machine cleaner is genuinely enough. Deep cleaning is worth paying for when the smell keeps returning after cleaning cycles, when black flecks appear on laundry, or when the machine has never been opened up. We would rather tell you that than sell you a job you do not need.
Start with a clean baseline
Maintenance works best on a machine that is already clean. Book a deep clean, then keep to the schedule.

Frequently asked questions
How often should a washing machine be professionally cleaned in Singapore?
Every 12 to 18 months. Local humidity and the enclosed service yards common in HDB flats and condos mean drums rarely dry fully between washes, so build-up develops faster than in drier climates.
Does using less detergent really help?
Yes, significantly. Singapore’s water is soft, so most households overdose detergent. The excess does not wash away; it deposits as scum on the drum surfaces and is the primary cause of the layer we find during deep cleans.
Can maintenance replace a deep clean?
It can prevent you ever needing an urgent one, but it cannot remove build-up that has already formed on the drum’s outer surface. Start from a clean baseline, then maintain.
