Why do Singapore bathrooms build up limescale, mould and dark grout so quickly?

Singapore is hot and humid all year, so bathroom surfaces rarely dry out completely. Many HDB and BTO bathrooms have only a small window or depend on an exhaust fan, and condo en-suites often have no window at all. Moisture stays on grout lines, silicone and shower screens, and that damp film is what mould needs to grow.

How do you remove limescale from taps, shower screens and tiles?

Limescale comes off with mild acid and patience, not force.

• Taps and mixers: wrap a cloth soaked in diluted vinegar or citric acid solution around the spout for 20–30 minutes, then wipe and rinse. An old toothbrush reaches the base.
• Shower heads: tie a plastic bag filled with the solution over the head and leave it for an hour. Then run hot water to flush the nozzles.
• Glass screens: spray, leave for a few minutes, scrub with a non-scratch sponge, then rinse and squeegee dry. If the glass stays cloudy, it may be etched, and cleaning cannot fix etching.
• Tiles and grout: spray, wait, then brush. Rinse well so no acid is left sitting in the grout.

Keep acid off natural stone. Check the manufacturer’s guidance before using it on brass or gold-tone fittings, and never combine it with bleach.

The habit that saves the most time costs nothing: squeegee the glass and wipe the taps after each shower. If the water does not evaporate on the surface, very little scale forms.

How do you deal with mould and blackened grout?

Mould and dirty grout can look alike, but they need different treatment. Use a chlorine-based product on mould. Use scrubbing on dirt that has worked into the grout.

For black spots on grout, ceiling corners and silicone, spray a mould remover and leave it for the time stated on the label, then rinse thoroughly. On stubborn silicone, press a tissue soaked in the product onto the line so it stays wet. Keep the exhaust fan running, the door open and your gloves on the whole time.

For grey or brown grout that is simply dirty, use a neutral cleaner or a paste of baking soda and water with a stiff grout brush. Work one small section at a time and rinse as you go.

Know where cleaning stops. If the black marks sit under clear silicone, the mould is behind the seal. The fix is to cut out the sealant and replace it, which is a handyman job, not a cleaning one. Cracked or missing grout also needs regrouting.

Prevention is mostly about airflow. Run the fan for 15–20 minutes after showers and leave the door ajar so the room can dry.

Step-by-step: a weekly bathroom cleaning routine

This routine takes about 20–30 minutes per bathroom and stops build-up from coming back.

• Step 1 – Ventilate and prepare: switch on the fan, open the window, put on gloves and clear bottles off the ledges.
• Step 2 – Apply toilet cleaner: squeeze gel under the rim and leave it to work while you clean elsewhere.
• Step 3 – Descale wet areas: spray the shower screen, taps and wall tiles with diluted vinegar or citric acid.
• Step 4 – Clean the basin and counter: use a neutral cleaner, then wipe dry.
• Step 5 – Scrub and rinse the shower area: brush the tiles and grout lines, rinse with the hand shower, then squeegee the glass.

• Step 8 – Do the floor last: wash the floor and squeegee the water towards the drain.

Short answer: To clean a kitchen hood filter, switch the hood off at the mains and unclip the metal filters. • 1. Switch off at the mains. Turn the hood off at the wall switch so the fan and lights cannot come on while your hands are inside.
• 2. Remove the filters. Press the release latch and lower each filter carefully, because old grease can drip.
• 3. Prepare the soak. Fill the sink with the hottest water you can safely handle. Add a generous squeeze of dishwashing liquid and a few spoonfuls of baking soda, and stir until the fizzing settles.
• 4. Soak for 15–20 minutes. Turn the filter over halfway through if it is not fully covered.

Can you clean the hood fan yourself?

Partly. The fan and motor sit behind the filter, and most manufacturers do not intend owners to take them apart. At home, limit yourself to the parts you can see and reach once the filters are out.

• Wipe the inside of the hood canopy and the filter frame with a cloth dampened in warm, soapy water, then dry with a clean cloth.
• Wipe any fan cover or grille you can reach without tools. Keep the cloth damp, not wet.
• Clean the outside panels and buttons with a non-abrasive cleaner suited to stainless steel or glass.
• Replace light bulbs only with the type given in the manual.

Do not spray liquid into the motor housing, remove the blower or open the ducting. Mould on wooden furniture rarely starts on the front of a door. It starts where air does not move. Check these spots first:

• Wardrobe back panels and corners, especially wardrobes built flush against an external wall or a wall shared with a bathroom.

Why do walls in Singapore homes get dirty so quickly?

Most wall marks in Singapore homes come from a few everyday sources. Children draw on walls and bump them with toys. Furniture and bags leave scuffs. Kitchen grease drifts across open-concept HDB and condo layouts, and hands leave a grey band around light switches and door frames. On top of that, the humidity is high all year, so dust sticks to walls and mould has an easy time in bathrooms, behind wardrobes and on walls that face the weather.

Which paint is on your HDB, BTO or condo walls, and why does it matter?

Most HDB flats, BTOs and condo units are painted with water-based emulsion in a matt or low-sheen finish. Matt paint hides wall flaws well, but it is porous and soft. If you scrub it hard, it ‘burnishes’: the rubbed area turns shinier than the wall around it, and that patch shows in daylight. Many owners repaint after collecting their keys or after a renovation, so your walls may not have the finish the developer used.

• Matt or flat: the most delicate finish. Dab and wipe it, never scrub, and avoid abrasive pads.
• Eggshell or satin: a slight sheen. It handles gentle washing well and is common in kitchens and children’s rooms.
• Semi-gloss or gloss: the most washable. You usually find it on doors, skirting and trims.
• Anti-mould or bathroom paint: resists moisture, but strong bleach can still fade the colour.

If you are not sure which finish you have, look at the wall from the side under a light. A flat, chalky look means matt. You can also check renovation records or ask your contractor. Whatever the finish, test any cleaner on a hidden spot, such as behind a door, before you use it on an open wall.

Use this checklist for general wall washing in any HDB, condo or landed home:

Black or grey speckles on walls are usually mould. In Singapore, it tends to grow in bathrooms, behind wardrobes set against outer walls, in corners of rooms that are closed up for long periods, and where there is a slow leak. Cleaning off the mould only helps if you also deal with the moisture behind it.

• Protect yourself: wear gloves and a mask, and open the windows before you start.
• Clean gently: use a mould cleaner meant for painted surfaces, or diluted white vinegar. Spray it on, wait a few minutes, then wipe. Do not scrub hard.
• Avoid mixing products: never combine bleach with vinegar or ammonia-based cleaners. Bleach can also lighten coloured paint.

Is it mould, mildew or water damage?

Work out what you are looking at before you start scrubbing, because the fix is different for each.

• Mould appears as black, dark green or brown spots, often fuzzy or in clusters, with a musty smell. It may stain the paint even after you remove it.
• Water damage shows as a yellow or brown ring, bubbling paint, or a damp patch that grows after rain or when the upstairs neighbour uses their bathroom. Mould often grows on top of it.

A quick test: dab the spot with a drop of diluted bleach. If it lightens within a minute or two, it is probably mould or mildew. If it does not change, it may be dirt or a stain in the paint.

• 1. Ventilate. Open the windows, switch on a fan and keep children and pets out of the room.
• 2. Protect yourself. Wear rubber gloves, a face mask and eye protection, especially when working overhead on ceilings.
• 3. Cover the floor and furniture with old towels or plastic sheets so spores and drips do not spread.
