Key takeaways

  • Mould grows on the drum’s outer face, in the gasket fold and in the dispenser channels.
  • Running bleach through the machine does not remove established mould — it lightens the colour.
  • From $188. The drum comes out so the mould can be physically removed.

Washing machine mould is extremely common in Singapore and is not a sign of a dirty household. It is what happens when a warm, damp, enclosed metal and rubber environment never gets the chance to dry out. The question is only how to remove it properly.

Where mould actually grows

  • The door gasket fold (front loaders) — the most common site by a wide margin
  • The drum’s outer face — mixed into the detergent scum layer
  • The detergent dispenser channels — especially the softener compartment
  • The drain filter housing — standing water plus trapped lint

Only the first and third are reachable by hand. The other two require the machine to be opened.

Why bleach cycles do not fix it

Running bleach through a machine is the most common DIY response, and it produces a misleading result: the mould goes pale and looks gone.

Bleach de-pigments mould rather than removing it. The organic matter stays on the surface, and because it is now colourless, it looks solved for a week or two until it darkens again. Meanwhile the scum layer it is growing in is untouched.

Physical removal is the only reliable method. Never mix bleach with vinegar or any acidic cleaner — that produces chlorine gas, which is genuinely dangerous in a small enclosed service yard.

Our 4-step on-site method

Every job below is carried out by our own crew as part of Sureclean’s washing machine cleaning service, on site at your home in Singapore. The method is the same whichever machine type you have — only the time on site changes.

1. Dismantle on site

The outer casing comes off and the inner drum is lifted out — in your bathroom or service yard. Nothing is taken away to a workshop.

2. High-pressure deep clean

The hidden outer surface of the drum, the housing, filter, rubber gasket and detergent dispenser are washed down with a high-pressure jet. This is the surface a wash cycle can never reach.

3. Sanitise

The full drum assembly is treated with sanitiser, then rinsed.

4. Reassemble and test-run

The machine is rebuilt and put through a full test cycle before our crew leaves, so you see it working.

What we actually find inside Singapore machines

On a typical three-to-five year old HDB machine that has never been opened, the outer drum surface carries a grey-black film of detergent scum mixed with mould. It is not visible from the door — you only see it once the drum is lifted out. In humid Singapore flats where the machine sits in an enclosed service yard or bathroom, this builds faster than in drier climates because the drum rarely dries out fully between washes.

Front loaders additionally trap residue in the rubber door gasket fold, which is where most musty smells originate. Top loaders tend to collect scum on the outer drum wall and under the pulsator plate.

When you do not need us

If your machine is under a year old, has no smell and leaves no marks on clothing, a monthly hot maintenance wash with a proper machine cleaner is genuinely enough. Deep cleaning is worth paying for when the smell keeps returning after cleaning cycles, when black flecks appear on laundry, or when the machine has never been opened up. We would rather tell you that than sell you a job you do not need.

Frequently asked questions

Does bleach remove washing machine mould?

Not really. Bleach removes the pigment so the mould looks gone, but the organic matter stays on the surface and darkens again within weeks. Physical removal is the only reliable method. Never mix bleach with vinegar or other acidic cleaners.

Is washing machine mould dangerous?

For most households it is an odour and laundry-freshness problem. For people with asthma or mould allergies it can aggravate symptoms, so it is worth dealing with promptly if anyone in the home is sensitive.

Will the mould come back after cleaning?

Not quickly, if you change the conditions that caused it: leave the door ajar after every wash, wipe the gasket weekly, and use less detergent. Without those habits it will gradually return.
