Why Your Washing Machine Smells Musty
Four causes, ranked by how common they are in Singapore homes

Key takeaways
- The door gasket is the most common source on front loaders; the outer drum surface on top loaders.
- If the smell returns within days of a cleaning cycle, the source is outside the drum.
- Leaving the door ajar after every wash prevents most recurrence and costs nothing.
A musty washing machine is not a sign you are doing anything wrong. It is a predictable outcome of washing in cold water in a humid climate with a machine that never fully dries. Here are the four causes in the order we actually find them in Singapore homes.

The four causes, in order of frequency
- The door gasket fold (front loaders). Standing water plus lint plus detergent equals mould, in a sealed rubber channel that never dries. Peel it back and look.
- The outer drum surface. Detergent scum and biofilm on the hidden face of the drum. This is the cause when the smell keeps returning after cleaning cycles.
- The drain filter (front loaders). Trapped lint, hair and debris sitting in stagnant water behind the small hatch at the bottom front.
- The detergent dispenser. Softener residue is thick and sticky and it sets in the drawer channels, growing mould on top.
Try this first — it may be all you need
Before booking anything, spend twenty minutes: clean out the dispenser drawer, clear the drain filter, wipe inside the gasket fold, then run an empty 60°C wash with a proper machine cleaner. Then leave the door ajar between every wash from now on.
If the smell is gone and stays gone, you have solved it for the cost of a bottle of cleaner. That is a good outcome and we would rather you have it.
When a deep clean is the only fix
Book a service when the smell returns within a few days of that routine, when black flecks appear on laundry, when you can see dark residue in the drum perforations, or when the machine is over three years old and has never been opened.
Those all point to the same thing: residue on surfaces the machine cannot reach by itself.
Our 4-step on-site method
Every job below is carried out by our own crew as part of Sureclean’s washing machine cleaning service, on site at your home in Singapore. The method is the same whichever machine type you have — only the time on site changes.
1. Dismantle on site
The outer casing comes off and the inner drum is lifted out — in your bathroom or service yard. Nothing is taken away to a workshop.
2. High-pressure deep clean
The hidden outer surface of the drum, the housing, filter, rubber gasket and detergent dispenser are washed down with a high-pressure jet. This is the surface a wash cycle can never reach.
3. Sanitise
The full drum assembly is treated with sanitiser, then rinsed.
4. Reassemble and test-run
The machine is rebuilt and put through a full test cycle before our crew leaves, so you see it working.
What we actually find inside Singapore machines
On a typical three-to-five year old HDB machine that has never been opened, the outer drum surface carries a grey-black film of detergent scum mixed with mould. It is not visible from the door — you only see it once the drum is lifted out. In humid Singapore flats where the machine sits in an enclosed service yard or bathroom, this builds faster than in drier climates because the drum rarely dries out fully between washes.
Front loaders additionally trap residue in the rubber door gasket fold, which is where most musty smells originate. Top loaders tend to collect scum on the outer drum wall and under the pulsator plate.

When you do not need us
If your machine is under a year old, has no smell and leaves no marks on clothing, a monthly hot maintenance wash with a proper machine cleaner is genuinely enough. Deep cleaning is worth paying for when the smell keeps returning after cleaning cycles, when black flecks appear on laundry, or when the machine has never been opened up. We would rather tell you that than sell you a job you do not need.
Smell keeps coming back?
That means it is outside the drum. We take the drum out and clean the surface properly.

Frequently asked questions
Why does my washing machine smell even though I clean it?
Because cleaning cycles only reach the inside of the drum. The mould and detergent scum causing the smell sit on the drum’s outer surface and in the housing, which no cycle can scrub. That is why the smell fades for a few washes and returns.
Does leaving the washing machine door open help?
Yes, significantly. It lets the drum and gasket dry between washes, which removes the moisture mould needs. In Singapore’s humidity it is the single most effective preventative habit.
Can a musty machine make my clothes smell?
Yes. Clothes washed in a machine with established biofilm pick up that odour, which is why laundry can come out smelling stale even on a fresh cycle.
Is washing machine mould harmful?
The mould species found in washing machines can aggravate allergies and asthma in sensitive people. For most households it is primarily an odour and laundry-freshness problem, but it is worth dealing with if anyone in the home has respiratory sensitivities.
