Self Clean / Tub Clean — what it does and does not do
Most Hitachi machines include a Self Clean / Tub Clean programme. It soaks and drains the tub at high temperature, and is commonly found on Hitachi top loaders. Run it when the machine prompts you — it is good routine maintenance and it costs nothing.
What it cannot do is scrub. It circulates hot water past the drum surfaces, which helps on a machine that is already clean and does comparatively little for one with an established layer of detergent scum on the drum’s outer face.
If your Hitachi still smells after running it, that is the clearest signal that the residue is on a surface the cycle never reaches.

The hidden outer surface of the drum, the housing, filter, rubber gasket and detergent dispenser are washed down with a high-pressure jet. This is the surface a wash cycle can never reach.
3. Sanitise
The full drum assembly is treated with sanitiser, then rinsed.
4. Reassemble and test-run
The machine is rebuilt and put through a full test cycle before our crew leaves, so you see it working.
What we actually find inside Singapore machines
On a typical three-to-five year old HDB machine that has never been opened, the outer drum surface carries a grey-black film of detergent scum mixed with mould. It is not visible from the door — you only see it once the drum is lifted out. In humid Singapore flats where the machine sits in an enclosed service yard or bathroom, this builds faster than in drier climates because the drum rarely dries out fully between washes.
Front loaders additionally trap residue in the rubber door gasket fold, which is where most musty smells originate. Top loaders tend to collect scum on the outer drum wall and under the pulsator plate.

It runs an empty high-temperature cycle to discourage build-up on the inner drum. It is worth running monthly, but it circulates hot water rather than scrubbing, so it cannot clean the drum’s outer surface where persistent odour develops.
